Maramures

The merry cemetery

The commune has an original, one-of-its-kind cemetery ( The Merry Cemetery ) which was craftsman Stan Patras's idea in 1935. The croses carved and coloured by Stan Patras and his apprentices represent in caricature the good aspects and especially the imperfections of the deceased. The commune of Sapanta is also famous for its cottage industry turning out beautiful traditional woolen blankets, men's folk hats and folk costumes.

Wooden Churches
Quite famous are the old wooden churches with high steeples, an expression of an exceptional architectural techinique, such as those in the villages of Surdesti (with a 53 m high steeple), Rozavlea, Bogdan Voda etc. The yards of peasant houses in Maramures impress visitors by their monumental wooden gatees, with the symbols of life carved on them, forming a real wooden lace.

Mocanita

If we have aroused your curiosity and the wish to travel.in time with an elegant nostalgia train, we let you know that you have the chance to fulfill this dream: CFR Calatori makes available for the ones willing to make more or less nostalgic voyages by nostalgia trains, on the touring routes or any other transport relationships in the country.
